Wildlife In Jammu & Kashmir

Dachigam
A very scenic valley with large meandering river. The surrounding
mountainside contains the rare Kashmir stag (hangul), also black
and brown bears. A trek to the upper reaches, where you can camp,
offers spectacular vistas. There you may also see the musk deer,
a small species widely hunted for the male's musk gland, consider
valuable in treating importance and a mojar export to Europe's perfumeries.
The sanctuary is 22 kms. by road from Srinagar and 311 kms. from
station, certainly wroth to visit.

Gulmarg
Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve 48 km from Srinagar, the reserve has an area of 180 sq km, and an altitudinal range of 2,400 - 4,300 meters above sea level. Fauna includes Himalayan musk deer, red fox, brown and black bear. among avifauna are upland birds, both resident and migratory. The best time for animal viewing is September to March and for bird viewing March to May.

Jasrota
Jasrota Wildlife Sanctuary has an area of 10 sq km, it houses an appreciable variety of bird and animal life, most notably cheetal or axis deer.

Keibul
Keibul Lam Jao National Park is unusual wilderness that homes the Sangai or Manipur brow - antlered deer. The hunting reserve for water fowl, is just 40 sq. km. in area. It was declared a sanctuary in 1954 when numbers of the highly localised Sangai became dangerously depleted. The graceful deer, noted for their curved antlers, live on the floating vegetation on the Logtak Lake, 32 km south of Imphal.

Nandni Wildlife Sanctuary (26 km) from Jammu, sanctuary has an area of 33 sq km.
